Toulmin Method in an online world
The model of argument dissection
Toulmin developed is fairly straightforward yet powerful as it allows for a
simple, repeatable process to break an argument down. The simple approach is beneficial to sorting
through the argument noise encountered every day, both professional and
personally. The ability to argue seems
as popular as ever with online platforms facilitating the ability to argue in a
much easier fashion, for better or worse.
The caveat to this is it often isn’t about argument, or critical
thinking, rather, who can ‘scream’ the loudest – I could also make this case
this situation arises professionally as well.
All that aside, identifying the three main elements of an argument
(claim, reason, and evidence) as well as the warrant can greatly assist in
sorting through the noise that often accompanies an argument.
The advent of
instantaneous information, valid or not, I believe has helped
argumentation. The challenge, however,
is executing a level headed argument in an environment where typical social etiquette
does not exist. The prevalence of
incorrect information spread across online content is another facet of this
challenge – an argument based on fallacy is a waste of time but can the arguer
be convinced of their error? THUNK examines some of
this with a look into a Reddit’s “Change My View” forum, one that is dedicated
to rational, persuasive arguments.
Successful counter arguments were flagged and analyzed to understand
what made them successful – it is an interesting concept to further the art of
arguing online, a medium in which lacks the tact for refinement.
While Toulmin’s method
provides a sound approach to argument examination, the wildcard in the act of
arguments is human emotion. A topic that
invokes passion is likely to trigger an emotional reaction and therefor,
critical thinking is abandoned. Most
likely not entirely deliberate, it is a human reaction – truly polished arguers
maintain their composure and provide the necessary detail for a counter
argument or rebuttal. However, for the
bulk of the population (myself included) that is a large hurdle to overcome
when arguing a topic that one has a great deal of thought or care invested. Communication is essential for us all
personally and especially professionally and the ability to argue effectively is
a critical component of our communication tool box, of which, Toulmin’s method is
a key utility.
